What APNs Need to Know about Recent Changes to New Jersey’s Prescription Monitoring Program

September 22nd, 2015

New Jersey law established a Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) in 2007. That law was recently amended as part of an ongoing effort to combat drug abuse and addiction.  All prescribers with CDS Registrations, including Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs), are required to register to access the PMP and check on any patients to whom they prescribe Schedule II medications in order to make sure such patients are not abusing their medications by, for example, obtaining prescriptions from multiple sources. If you are an APN who prescribes CDS, you should read the notice from the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) and comply with its instructions.   You can find the notice on the New Jersey Board of Nursing website or you can access it directly through the following link:   http://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/Documents/Notice-to-Prescribers-Pharmacies-S1998.pdf
